How to Freeze Bacon Jam

The best way to freeze bacon jam is in small portions that you can be sure you will be able to eat within a few days of opening. So before you start, make sure you have enough freezer-safe jars. You need one for every portion of bacon jam you intend to freeze.

If you don’t have containers, then freezer bags will work in a pinch:

  1. Cool
If you have homemade bacon jam, then make sure you allow it to cool completely before freezing.
  2. Portion Out
Spoon your portions of bacon jam into the containers. Make sure you leave an inch or two gap at the top of the jar because the jam will expand a little as it freezes. If there is no space for it to expand into it can end up breaking the jar.  If you have chosen to use freezer bags, then you can spoon the portion of bacon jam into bags instead.
  3. Seal
Pop the lid on the containers. Make sure you get a good seal to keep the bacon jam airtight in the freezer. If you have chosen to freeze in bags, you need to squeeze out as much air as possible from the bags before sealing them tightly.
  4. Freeze
Label the containers of bacon jam with the contents and the date and pop them into the freezer.

2 Tips for Freezing Bacon Jam

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 2 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing bacon jam to have the best results:

  • Be Careful – Food poisoning is something you need to consider when making and storing bacon jam. This is why we recommend that you freeze it if you have more than you can eat within a couple of weeks. Any unfrozen bacon jam should be kept in the fridge at all times to avoid the growth of nasty bacteria such as clostridium botulinum which is the cause of botulism.
  • Remove Air – If you are using freezer bags, then it is really important to squeeze out as much air as possible from the bags. To ensure as close to vacuum seal as possible, pop a straw into the bag and suck out the air before sealing the bags. This is the straw method, and it can be used when you are freezing lots of foods to keep them protected and airtight.

Once thawed, you should be aiming to eat the bacon jam within 2 to four weeks, although we would recommend you eat it as soon as possible.

How Do You Defrost Bacon Jam?

Defrosting your bacon jam is really easy to do, but it requires little time and patience. All you have to do is take the container of bacon jam out of the freezer and pop it into the fridge. It will take several hours, up to about a day, although this will depend on how big your portion of bacon jam is. The larger the portion, the more time it will take, so make sure you adjust your times accordingly.

We would not recommend using a microwave or any other method of thawing out the bacon jam quickly. The issue with these methods is they also heat the food a little, which means the food is sitting at the perfect temperature for harmful bacteria to grow for far too long. So, be patient and thaw out your bacon jam in the fridge.

Can You Refreeze Bacon Jam?

No, as we have already mentioned, bacon jam can easily harbour and grow harmful bacteria. This is why we wouldn’t recommend that once you have thawed out the bacon jam, you try and refreeze it. It just isn’t worth the risk to make you or your loved ones sick.

Does Bacon Jam Freeze Well?

Bacon jam does freeze well! Most of this type of jam and relishes are made to be stored either in the fridge or the freezer, and they tend to retain their texture and flavour well when stored using either method.
