Zeppole are small, Italian, light doughnut balls. Theyā€™re something hard to say no to and delightfully tasty regardless. But if you manage to have any leftovers, then what can you do with them?

Can You Freeze Zeppole?

Yes, you can freeze zeppole for up to 6 months. Flash freeze the zeppole on a sheet of baking paper before transferring them to a freezer bag, removing excess air, and sealing the bag. Finally, transfer it to the freezer.

How to Freeze Zeppole

Freezing zeppole isnā€™t as simple as stacking them in your freezer like a fragile croquembouche. Instead, weā€™d suggest following our steps for the best results possible:

  1. Pop Onto a Tray: Place the zeppole onto a lined baking sheet, ensuring that no two zeppole are touching. If two do touch, then they will freeze together, which will damage their quality in the long run.
  2. Freeze: Transferring the sheet into the freezer is the simplest way to flash freeze zeppole. Place the sheet flat, and allow it to sit for around an hour.
  3. Bag Up and Remove Air: Pop the zeppole into a large freezer bag and push out as much excess air as possible.
  4. Seal: Sealing the bag as well as possible will ensure that no air can get back in to make the treats stale while also ensuring that the environment is sealed against the cold, damp air of the freezer.
  5. Label: Labelling the container with the correct date is a great way to ensure you can manage how long the zeppole are frozen.
  6. Freeze: Transferring the bag to the centre of the freezer keeps the zeppole as far from the frost front as possible.

3 Tips for Freezing Zeppole

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing zeppole to have the best results:

Remove Air
As little air within the bag will ensure there can be as little staling as possible. To ensure thereā€™s little air, make sure that you pack the zeppole in as tightly as possible before pressing out as much air as you can.

Avoid Dusting Before Freezing
Dusting the zeppole with icing sugar will lead to the zeppole attracting moisture while in your freezer. To avoid this issue, we recommend avoiding dusting the zeppole before you freeze them.Ā

Check the Seal
If the bag is sealed, you have far less to worry about concerning moisture and humidity – the thick plastic of freezer bags will keep out moisture from the freezer.

How Long Can You Freeze Zeppole?

You can freeze zeppole for up to 6 months before any noticeable degradation in quality occurs.

To make sure that you get the fullness of this time in your freezer, we recommend making sure that you follow our freezing steps thoroughly. This will help to preserve the zeppole well.

How Long Do Zeppole Last in the Fridge?

Zeppole will last 3 to 4 days in the fridge in an airtight Tupperware container. Unfortunately, after just a day, they will begin to dry out.

How Do You Defrost Zeppole?

You can defrost zeppole by allowing them to thaw on a cooling rack in a room temperature room. Make sure to place a towel under them, as that will catch any dripping moisture.

Once thawed, microwave them for ten to twenty seconds – this will ensure theyā€™re pleasantly warm when eaten.

Can You Refreeze Zeppole?

Yes, you can refreeze zeppole, as they contain no meat, dairy, or fish. This means that itā€™s safe to refreeze them. But being safe isn’t necessarily a reason to refreeze them.

We advise against it, in fact! Zeppole have a lot of light air bubbles, which can collapse if they get too moist. Repeated freezing can lead to this happening.

Do Zeppole Freeze Well?

Yes, zeppole do freeze well. We say this as they donā€™t lose much of their structure or flavour during or after freezing.

To ensure that your zeppole freeze well, we recommend making sure to follow the instructions that weā€™ve laid out throughout this article.

If youā€™ve still got questions about freezing zeppole or zeppole in general, then these may help:

Can You Reheat Zeppole?

Yes, zeppole are best served hot, which is why it’s good news that you can reheat them. Either wrap in foil and pop them into an oven for 10 minutes or pop them into a microwave in a microwave-safe dish.

How Do You Make Zeppole Soft Again?

Zeppole will dry out fairly quickly once they have been cooked. The best way to make them soft again is to wrap them in foil and pop them into a hot oven for 10 to 15 minutes.
