Can You Freeze Vegan Mayonnaise?

How to Freeze Vegan Mayonnaise

Vegan mayonnaise cannot really be frozen by just throwing the container into the freezer. To properly freeze vegan mayo, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Correct Container: Finding the correct container to use can be a bit tricky. When liquids freeze, they can expand by up to twenty percent! To avoid breakage, ensure you use a container that will only be four-fifths full when you’ve added all of your mayo.
  2. Transfer the Mayo: Transferring the mayonnaise is really quite simple – just using a spoon will work well. You don’t need to be precious about avoiding the sides of the container. As long as the outside of the container is clean, you’ll be good to go.
  3. Remove Bubbles: Removing the bubbles from the container is important, as any bubbles of air will condense to water quickly, before freezing to ice and being a starting point for freezer burn to occur. Just give the container a quick bang or two on the worktop.
  4. Seal the Lid: Sealing the lid next is essential – a layer of water on top of the mayo will freeze to ice before being a starting point for freezer burn, inevitably. Avoid this by ensuring that the container is sealed.
  5. Freeze: You can place mayonnaise at the centre of your freezer, or closer to the edges – either way will work. The reason for this is that mayonnaise has no solid components, so the texture will not be destroyed.

3 Tips for Freezing Vegan Mayonnaise

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing vegan ,ayonnaise to have the best results:

Seal the Container
Sealing the container totally is the best, and only, way to make sure that the mayonnaise is as good as possible. If you leave the container open, then the mayonnaise may leak from the container during freezing.

Use a VERY Clean Container
The reason for this is that vegan mayonnaise can soak up flavors and aromas very well, as can most creamy food items. Therefore, if you’re using a jar that once contained curry sauce, and was not well cleaned, your mayonnaise will likely come out smelling a little like curry

Include Vegan on the Label
If you have frozen normal mayonnaise (not that you should) or other dairy products, it can be hard to tell them apart once frozen. Ensure you clearly label it with the word VEGAN.

How Long Can You Freeze Vegan Mayonnaise?

You can freeze vegan mayonnaise for around three months before it starts to deteriorate at all. Beyond that time, it will still be safe to eat, but may have a worse flavour.

During its time in the freezer, mayonnaise may lose some integral flavour compounds that give it that salty tang that we all love. To be sure that it’s tasty, eat it within three months.

How Long Does Vegan Mayonnaise Last in the Fridge?

Store-bought vegan mayonnaise will last for up to 6 months in the fridge once it has been opened. Homemade vegan mayonnaise will only keep for 2 weeks, however.

How Do You Defrost Vegan Mayonnaise?

Vegan mayo (as with regular mayo) is a mixture of oil and water, which don’t usually mix. This is achieved through the use of emulsifiers and a lot of force. In traditional mayonnaise, egg yolk acts as an emulsifier, and makes the process easier.

In vegan mayonnaise, however, the best way to reform any emulsion that you may have broken down within the mayonnaise is to use force.

Therefore, decant the thawed mayonnaise into a food processor or blender, and use the highest setting for thirty seconds to a minute. This will result in the emulsion reforming, and the mayonnaise is as tasty as it was fresh.

Can You Refreeze Vegan Mayonnaise?

Yes, vegan mayonnaise can be refrozen.

The reason for this is that it contains no meat, fish, or dairy, which cannot be refrozen, due to concerns about food hygiene.

Does Vegan Mayonnaise Freeze Well?

Yes, vegan mayonnaise does freeze well.

We urge you to consider the hassle of reblending it when you thaw the vegan mayonnaise, as that can be quite a frustrating part of the process.

If that’s the kind of thing that you might not want to do, then you may be best served by buying vegan mayo in smaller amounts, so that you use it up more quickly.
