To freeze them, simply add them to a freezer-safe bag. Leave around one inch in space at the top and press out as much air as possible before sealing the bag. Write todayā€™s date and the use-by date on the front of the bag and place your sunflower seeds in the freezer.

3 Tips for Freezing Sunflower Seeds

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing sunflower seeds to have the best results:

Freeze OR Refrigerate
You can keep sunflower seeds for at least one year in the fridge or freezer, so it doesnā€™t matter where you store them. This is good to know if youā€™re short on freezer or fridge space and want to move your seeds from one location to another.

When stored in an airtight container at room temperature, sunflower seeds will be good for at least three months.

Keep Them Indefinitely
Sunflower seeds donā€™t actually go off. If you keep them in the fridge or freezer, they will be fine indefinitely. The reason we recommend using them within twelve months is that this timeframe ensures they will taste good and means your sunflower seeds retain all of their mineral and nutrient properties.

Use From Frozen
Whether youā€™re adding them to your morning smoothie or baking them into your signature cake, you can use sunflower seeds from frozen. This saves you a lot of preparation time in the kitchen and is another benefit of keeping your seeds in the freezer.

How Long Can You Freeze Sunflower Seeds?

You can freeze sunflower seeds for around twelve months. But as mentioned, sunflower seeds donā€™t really go off, and you can use them long after this.

Just be mindful that their taste will begin to deteriorate, and they may not be as rich in nutrients after this time.

Ultimately, a year is a long time to keep any type of food in the freezer, so you should be able to use up your sunflower seeds within this time.

How Do You Defrost Sunflower Seeds?

Can You Refreeze Sunflower Seeds?

Thereā€™s nothing wrong with freezing sunflower seeds for a second time, providing you have thawed them in the fridge. Just be mindful that the more times you freeze and defrost any type of seed, you risk affecting its taste and texture due to the crystallisation process that occurs during freezing.

So, itā€™s best to store sunflower seeds in smaller portions, so you can easily take out whatever you need at any given time.
