How To Freeze Sausage Rolls
When it comes to freezing sausage rolls, there are two approaches you can take. You can choose to freeze them cooked or, if possible you can freeze them uncooked which is a better approach to take.
How to Freeze Uncooked Sausage Rolls
First, we’re going to look at freezing uncooked sausage rolls. This is a great way to go about freezing sausage rolls because you can then bake them fresh, and they’ll remain crispy and golden.
In fact, with this approach, you’ll struggle to tell the difference between fresh and frozen sausage rolls! So here goes:
- Prepare Your Sausage Rolls: Make your sausage rolls up to the point where you have cut them into sausage rolls. You can egg glaze them at this point or you can do it when you cook them in future.
- Flash Freeze: Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper and place your sausage rolls on the tray – it’s essential to make sure none of them are touching one another as they will stick together. Place the tray in the freezer for a few hours until your sausage rolls are frozen solid.
- Final Freeze: At this point, you can remove it from the tray and place in an airtight container or freezer bag. Return the container or bag to the freezer.
How to Freeze Cooked Sausage Rolls
If you have the choice, then we would actually recommend freezing sausage rolls uncooked – they seem to come out a little better when baked almost fresh from the freezer as opposed to just being warmed up.
When it comes to freezing cooked sausage rolls, the method doesn’t change an awful lot. Before you do anything though you need to allow your sausage rolls to cool completely to room temperature.
- Flash Freeze: Once cooled, you can line a baking tray with baking paper before topping with your cooked sausage rolls. Place the tray in the freezer to flash freeze them for a few hours. You want the outside to be frozen solid.
- Final Freeze: Once frozen, tip them into a freezer bag and seal. Try to remove as much air from the bag as possible when sealing the bag up. Return to the freezer.
3 Tips for Freezing Sausage Rolls
Now you know how to freeze sausage rolls cooked and uncooked, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing them to have the best results:
Uncooked is Best
By freezing them uncooked, you can essentially cook them fresh. This will ensure they are super crispy, flaking and delicious. If you can choose, then freeze them before baking them.
Don’t Bother Defrosting
You don’t need to defrost them if you haven’t cooked them. Cook them at the temperature you normally would and add 10 minutes to the usual cooking time.
Flash Freeze
You don’t want your sausage rolls to clump together. That’s why you need to flash freeze them beforehand. This will make it super easy to grab 1, 2, 3 or more at a time.
How Long Can You Freeze Sausage Rolls?
We wouldn’t recommend freezing sausage rolls for too long. Try to use your frozen sausage rolls up within 3 months. This will require a little planning ahead to avoid wasting them but will be worth it when it comes to eating them.
Beyond 3 months, they should remain safe to eat, but the texture may degrade somewhat.
As always, you must label your frozen sausage rolls with what they are (especially if you’ve frozen vegan ones too!) and the date that they need to be consumed by.
Homemade and cooked sausage rolls with last for up to 4 days in the fridge.
How Do You Defrost Sausage Rolls?
When it comes to defrosting and warming up your sausage rolls, it comes down to how you have frozen your sausage rolls. Below we have outlined what you need to do depending on what form the sausage rolls are frozen in:
Uncooked Sausage Rolls: If you want to defrost uncooked sausage rolls then the good news is you don’t need to! Grab your sausage rolls from the freezer, place on a baking tray and then egg wash.
If you can remember the recipe you used then you need to use the same oven temperature but cook them for an extra 10 minutes.
If you can’t remember the recipe, then 180c for 45 minutes will usually be plenty, but this will come down to the size of your sausage rolls of course.
Cooked Sausage Rolls: If you have frozen already cooked sausage rolls then defrost the sausage rolls on the kitchen worktop for around an hour and then warm through in a hot oven for just 5 to 10 minutes.
Can You Refreeze Sausage Rolls?
You certainly can! You can even cook frozen sausage rolls from frozen and then freeze them once they’re cooked. When you reheat them though you must ensure they are piping hot throughout.
It’s also worth remembering that the more you reheat/refreeze something, the more you will ruin the texture and degrade the flavour so try to avoid refreezing them when possible.
That’s why you flash freeze them to avoid them sticking together so you can grab as many or as little as you need at a time.
Do Sausage Rolls Freeze Well?
Sausage rolls do freeze particularly well – especially if you choose to freeze them uncooked.
By freezing them uncooked, you do all of the cooking after being frozen, which gives you golden, flaky pastry which is exactly what you want from sausage rolls.
Frozen cooked sausage rolls do also freeze well but can sometimes become a little soggy and the pastry may not crisp up fully.
