How to Freeze Rice Krispies

Unfortunately, freezing rice krispies isn’t as simple as tossing a box of them into the freezer. There are a few steps you’ll need to take along the way:

  1. Transfer to a Container: Transferring the cereal to an air-tight container is the most vital part of this process. The reason for this is that rice krispies will rapidly deteriorate under humid or damp conditions.
  2. Seal and Remove Air: Seal the airtight container to be sure that none of the humid air within the freezer could make its way into your cereal. That would rapidly deteriorate the rice krispies, leading to poor final food. This may be tricky with a rigid plastic container, but try to press out as much excess air as possible.
  3. Freeze: Placing the container into the centre of the freezer will make the chilling process as gentle as possible. This will minimize the amount of condensation and ice that forms within the airtight container.

Using containers with as little excess space as possible will enable you to reduce the staling reaction in the cereal. Therefore, using containers with little excess space is preferable.Ā

Consider Your Portions
There’s no point freezing half of a box of rice krispies in one container if you only eat one bowl at a time. Instead, consider the portions you usually eat it in and freeze it in those exact portion sizes.

How Long Can You Freeze Rice Krispies?

You can freeze rice krispies for around 1 month before they deteriorate in quality.

Interestingly, itā€™s not the freezing process that damages them. Instead, itā€™s going stale – we can slow this process through freezing but not entirely stop it.

You can pop a food-safe dehumidifier in the container which should absorb some of the excess moisture.

How Long Do Rice Krispies Last?

Rice krispies will last for several months in the cupboard once opened. They will usually be fine to consume around 6 months after the best-before date but you will find they become softer and softer with time.

How Do You Defrost Rice Krispies?

You can defrost rice krispies by simply transferring the container from the freezer to the countertop in your kitchen. This will allow them to thaw quite quickly and efficiently.

To ensure that theyā€™re thawed, we suggest allowing them to stand on the counter overnight – this will allow you to come to them in the morning and easily enjoy a thawed bowl of your favourite breakfast cereal.

Can You Refreeze Rice Krispies?

Technically, yes, you can refreeze rice krispies.

However, we would generally advise against it. The reason for this is that the rice krispies will start to deteriorate over time, and this process wonā€™t be restored through thawing. To that end, only thaw what youā€™ll be able to use in your kitchen.

Do Rice Krispies Freeze Well?

Rice krispies do freeze well, yes. The reason for this is that youā€™re able to totally customize what you store them in.
