Quark has become increasingly popular among bakers and anyone who loves to cook with creamy dairy products but doesnā€™t like the high-calorie count that usually comes with cheese, milk and cream.

Quark is a type of cheese that makes a great alternative because it adds great flavour and texture but is low in calories and fat. It is no wonder people are starting to ask, can you freeze quark?

Quark can be frozen for up to 6 weeks. Like most dairy products and cheese, quark does not freeze particularly well and there will be inevitable changes to the texture after freezing it.

How To Freeze Quark

Freezing quark isnā€™t a difficult process, but you will get mixed results. To give yourself the best chance possible, it is worth finding or making quark with higher fat content.

This is because higher fat content yoghurt and curd type cheeses tend to freeze a little better than the lower-fat alternatives.

  1. Label Bags
Grab yourself some freezer bags and label them with a sharpie. You want to write the contents and the date on the bag, so you know when you need to use it by,
  2. Portion
Pop a portion of quark into each freezer bag. Make sure you only fill the bag about three-quarters full at the most.

This is, so you allow the quark to expand as it freezes. If you prefer you could use freezer-safe containers, but we would recommend freezer bags so you can squeeze the air out of them before freezing.
  3. Seal
Squeeze out any excess air and seal the bag tightly. If you have decided to use freezer-safe containers, then pop the lid on and ensure it is shut tightly.
  4. Freeze
Put the bags or containers into the freezer and freeze.

How to Freeze Quark Cheesecake

Just like any cheesecake, you can freeze quark cheesecake but be aware that the thawed out version may not taste as nice as it would have done fresh.

This is especially true for unbaked cheesecakes, and it might not be worth freezing because there is very little you can do about the texture change when it comes to serving the cheesecake.

Baked cheesecakes tend to freeze a little better, but even then you should expect a slight change in texture.

3 Tips for Freezing Quark

Now you know how to freeze quark, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing them to have the best results:

Don’t Bother
Quark does not freeze well. You, therefore, have to consider whether it’s really worth even bothering freezing it or not. There will be textural changes when freezing Quark and you must be prepared for this.

Go High Fat
Higher-fat quark will freeze slightly better than low-fat options so, where possible, buy quark that is packed full of fat, even if it is not suitable for you.

Defrost Slowly
When thawing, you need to go with the slow and steady approach. If you try to thaw it quickly, it will split even more, and you’ll be left with watery, lumpy quark.

How Long Can You Freeze Quark?

Quark isnā€™t likely to last too long in the freezer before it starts to deteriorate so we would recommend treating it like you would cottage cheese or cream and use it as soon as possible.

You should be able to get away with freezing it for about a month to six weeks if necessary.

Just take care when you take the quark out of the freezer and throw it away if there are any signs of it spoiling.

How Do You Defrost Quark?

For best results you will need to thaw out the quark slowly, allowing it time to defrost fully before using.

To defrost take the quark out of the freezer and pop it into a bowl. Put this into the fridge and let it defrost for several hours. You might find that it separates a little when it is thawed out. You can always stir it or blend to mix it back up again.

Can You Refreeze Quark?

You shouldnā€™t refreeze quark. It isnā€™t a recommended product for freezing at all, and the changes will be too great to even attempt to freeze a second time.

It also isnā€™t recommended to refreeze any food because you risk spoiling it or making yourself sick.

Does Quark Freeze Well?

Unfortunately, quark isnā€™t one of those food products that freeze well at all. You should expect that there will be a change in texture. However, if you add it to a recipe or your baking, you shouldnā€™t notice too much difference once it has been cooked.
