Prime rib is a very tasty cut of meat, and itā€™s one thatā€™s particularly enjoyed around the world. Weā€™re confident in saying that itā€™s the favorite cut of a number of people. If itā€™s your favorite, you may consider freezing some in order to store it for longer.

Can You Freeze Prime Rib?

Yes, you can freeze prime rib for up to 3 months. The best way to do this is to allow the rib to cool, before wrapping it in a layer of baking or butchersā€™ paper, and then wrapping that in a layer of cling film. Ensuring that the cling film is sealed, place the rib into the freezer, where it will freeze solid, and can be kept for three months without noticeable degradation in quality.

How to Freeze Prime Rib

We’re going to assume you’ve cooked a prime rib and now have some leftovers. Before you get to freezing it, you should first ensure that it is completely cooled.

This is because food, especially meat products, that is a little warm when you begin wrapping them can be hotbeds for microbial growth. Got it cooled? Now you can freeze it:

  1. Wrap: Once the rib is cool, wrap it in a layer of butcherā€™s paper or baking paper. Either of these options will work – we simply need to ensure that this first layer is breathable to a certain degree.
  2. Wrap Again: After the first layer of paper is complete, wrap the prime rib in a layer of cling film. This will create an airtight seal around the meat, which will prevent any juices from the meat from dripping into your freezer, as well as prevent any contaminants from the freezer from settling onto the meat.
  3. Freeze: Once the meat is entirely wrapped, place it into the centre of the freezer, preventing the meat from directly touching anything icy. This is because the onset of freezer burn typically comes from a contact point with a cold material.

3 Tips for Freezing Prime Rib

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing prime rib to have the best results:

Be Wary of Cross Contamination
Cross-contamination is one of the most intense food safety no-nos that we can think of – itā€™s vitally important to avoid contaminating any of your food with raw meat, most especially cooked meat. This applies even when both of the sets of meat are frozen, so avoid combining the two if at all possible.Ā

Ensure the Wrap is Airtight
Having the wrap of clingfilm be entirely airtight is the simplest, most effective way to prevent freezer burn since that will allow you to prevent ice from coming directly into contact with the meat.Ā

Use an Airtight Container
If the prime rib has been marinaded or cooked in a complex mixture of spices, an airtight container may be the best way to prevent those spices from losing flavour over time.Ā

How Long Can You Freeze Prime Rib?

You can freeze prime rib in your home for up to three months. Beyond that point, freezer burn is likely to set in, and the final result will be a cut of meat thatā€™s lost a lot of texture.

How Long Does Prime Rib Last in the Fridge?

Prime rib will keep for between 3 and 5 days in the fridge. You can extend this to 1 full week by storing it in a vacuum-packed bag before putting it into the fridge.

How Do You Defrost Prime Rib?

The simplest way to defrost prime rib is to place it in the fridge overnight. That will keep it at a food-safe temperature while also melting the ice in the rib itself.

Trying to speed this process up can be both dangerous and ruin the meat’s texture. when it comes to thawing any cuts of beef, we would go for the slow-and-steady option.

Can You Refreeze Prime Rib?

No, you cannot refreeze any meat product. After a meat product has thawed, it cannot be refrozen and must be treated as an entirely perishable item – either eaten or thrown away.

Does Prime Rib Freeze Well?

Yes, prime rib does freeze well. During the initial three-month freezing process, itā€™s exceptionally unlikely that youā€™ll notice any significant degradation of flavour or texture over time.

Were you to put a frozen and fresh prime rib side-by-side, then chances are you would be able to tell the difference. But, it’s unlikely that you will do a scientific experiment at home.

The changes are, therefore, really not that noticeable when you freeze it.
