How to Freeze Pasties

The biggest problem you might have when freezing pasties is that if you put them all in a container or bag together then they can stick together in a lump and make it difficult to separate one or two when you need them.

We have a method outlined below where this shouldnā€™t be a problem and also keeps the pasties protected from the air.

  1. Cool
If you have cooked your pasties at home then allow them to cool down before freezing. If you have unwrapped shop-bought pasties that are still in their packaging then you can pop these into the freezer without any prep. Just make sure you write the date on first so you know when to eat the pasties by.
  2. Wrap
Once your pasties are ready to freeze grab some cling film. You need to wrap each pasty individually in a double layer of cling film. This is the thing that will make it easier for you to grab just one out at a time and it protects the pastie from freezer burn and helps to keep it tasting fresh.
  3. Bag Up
When you have wrapped all of your pasties individually you can pop them into a freezer bag. Squeeze out the air from the bag and seal it tightly.
  4. Label
Label the bag with the date and contents. Donā€™t forget to write what type of pasty filling it is on the bag too just in case you have more than one filling type in the freezer.
  5. Freeze
Put the whole bag into the freezer and freeze. Be careful the pasties donā€™t get squashed until they are frozen.

How to Freeze Cornish Pasties

Cornish pasties are the perfect type of pasty to freeze. The filling freezes well and if you heat them up in the oven they will taste just as delicious after being frozen as they would have done fresh!

You can freeze your cornish pasties in the same method outlined above for freezing all types of pasties.

3 Tips for Freezing Pasties

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing pasties to have the best results:

  • Try Flash Freezing – If you are having problems with your pasties getting squashed in the freezer then you can try a slightly different method. Instead of putting the wrapped pasties directly into a freezer bag you can pop them onto a baking tray and freeze flat before transferring them into the bag once they are completely frozen. When they are frozen they shouldnā€™t get squashed anymore.
  • Add Extra Protection – To make extra sure that your pasties are protected from the air you can add a layer of tin foil over the cling film.
  • Consider Fillings – Always check whether or not your fillings are safe to freeze too. Some dairy-based fillings may not freeze as well as meat-based and gravy fillings so you might need to adjust the time it can be frozen or accept the pastie may change in texture slightly.

How Long Can You Freeze Pasties?

Most pasty types can be frozen for a fairly long time in the freezer. They should be fine for up to four months. Plenty of time to have a batch ready for lunches or snacks for weeks in advance!

How Do You Defrost Pasties?

You should always thaw out your pasties before heating them up. This is the safest way to eat and ensure that you donā€™t get sick from any harmful bacteria growth. Pop the pasty onto a plate and put it into the fridge overnight or for several hours. Then you are ready to reheat. The best way to reheat pasties is in the oven. This helps to crisp up the pasties as well as heating them through.

Can You Refreeze Pasties?

No, you cannot refreeze your pasties. Unfortunately freezing and thawing changes the structure of the food and there is also a danger of bacteria growth during some of this process which can make the fillings start to spoil.

Do Pasties Freeze Well?

Pasties do freeze well on the whole. The main issue you may find is that the pastry goes moist and soggy so the pasty may not be pleasant to eat cold. However, if you heat up the pasty in the oven you should find that it crisps up and is delicious.
