Like many grains and pasta, it is easy to overestimate how much you can eat and, before you know it, you’ve got a whole bowl of orzo you cannot eat. So, what do you do with it?

Can You Freeze Orzo?

Yes, you can freeze orzo for up to 2 months. Place the orzo into a rigid plastic container, leaving a little space between the lid and the top of the orzo. Then, allow it to cool, seal the container once cooled, and place it into the freezer.

How to Freeze Orzo

Freezing orzo isnā€™t too complex, but we still recommend following our steps to ensure success every time:

  1. Portion Into Containers: Place the orzo into rigid plastic containers, which ensures that you can keep the orzo stacked without causing it any damage. Make sure you choose containers with tight-fitting lids but don’t seal them yet.
  2. Cool: If you donā€™t do this, then a level of condensation will form in the freezer, which can lead to bacterial growth, which would obviously be dangerous. It could lead to cross-contamination.
  3. Seal: Seal the containers, ensuring that the lid is totally snapped on and properly shut all the way around. This will allow you to make sure that the food in your containers freezes well and that nothing is wasted.
  4. Freeze: Write a clear label on the lid of the container and then pop those containers into the freezer for up to 2 months.

What About Orzo With Other Ingredients?

It all comes down to the weakest ingredient. Your orzo will be limited by whatever the weakest element of the dish is.

Orzo can be frozen well with various pasta sauces such as puttanesca or marinara. However, if you have used fresher ingredients to make an orzo salad, such as fresh tomatoes or cucumber, then you may have an issue with texture when you defrost it.

3 Tips for Freezing Orzo

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing orzo to have the best results:

Limit the Freezing Time
Freezing orzo for too long is likely to lead to freezer burn. Of course, this isnā€™t ideal. To prevent this from taking place, donā€™t keep the orzo in the freezer for too long. Anything up to 2 months will be fine.

Check the Seal is Tight
Ensure that the orzo is well-sealed within the container to ensure that no frost can make its way in. Frost is the conduit through which freezer burn travels, so ensuring that your food is well sealed off from it is always in your best interests.

Consider Your Sauces
The flavour of the sauce will have an impact on how well it freezes. Most notably, a creamy sauce is liable to absorb different aromas from your freezer. Alternatively, a tomato-based sauce may add different aromas to your freezer if the container is left ajar.Ā

How Long Can You Freeze Orzo?

You can keep orzo in the freezer for quite a long time indeed – things donā€™t tend to spoil or otherwise go bad in the freezer. However, orzo is likely to lose texture over time.

Generally speaking, the maximum amount of time that you can freeze orzo is 2 months. After that, the orzo will begin to lose texture, and the final meal that you eat will, sadly, be less enjoyable.

How Long Does Orzo Last in the Fridge?

Once cooled, pop it straight into the fridge immediately, where it will keep for up to 5 days if it does not contain meat. If it contains meat, then only keep it for 2 days.

How Do You Defrost Orzo?

The best way to defrost orzo is to allow it to thaw in the fridge overnight fully. This will ensure that the orzo doesnā€™t spoil, as it would when kept at room temperature.

We recommend this instead of using your microwave as a microwave could begin to cook the sauce, leading to curdling that wouldnā€™t be very pleasant in the final meal. You may also accidentally overcook the orzo, turning it to mush.

Can You Refreeze Orzo?

This depends upon the ingredients that youā€™re using in the orzo really. If youā€™re only freezing orzo pasta on its own, then yes, it can be refrozen several times over with no safety concerns.

However, other ingredients, such as meat, raw dairy, and fish, can be subject to bacterial growth when thawed and refrozen. If your orzo dish contains those ingredients, it really shouldnā€™t be refrozen.

Does Orzo Freeze Well?

Yes, orzo does freeze well.

As orzo is dense, like all pasta, the pasta itself freezes pretty well, with relatively little freezer burn or textural damage. However, the orzo pasta can freeze more poorly over a longer period of time, so make sure you donā€™t freeze it for too long.

If youā€™ve still got questions about freezing orzo or orzo in general, then these may help:

Can You Freeze Creamy Orzo?

Creamy orzo will freeze fine but when you defrost it, you’ll find that the sauce has split, resulting in a grainy texture. If you’re going to freeze orzo in a sauce, stick to those with a tomato base.

Can You Freeze Orzo With Chicken?

Yes, orzo that is mixed with chicken can be frozen for 2 months. It is vital that the chicken is heated thoroughly once the orzo has defrosted, however.
