Few things are more indulgent than a fluffy muffin with your morning coffee. Whether zingy lemon, blueberry, or chocolate chip, a homemade muffin is a true delight, regardless of the recipe that you follow.

But one of the issues when baking muffins is that they quickly lose their fluffiness and can go hard after just a day or so.

With this in mind, you might be wondering if itā€™s possible to freeze muffins to preserve them for longer? Letā€™s take a look now.

The Quick Answer

Yes, you can freeze muffins. Muffins can be frozen for around 2 months. For best results, you should make sure muffins are cooked thoroughly before freezing, and you should get them in the freezer while theyā€™re still fresh.

How to Freeze Muffins

While thereā€™s little substitute for a freshly baked, warm muffin, freezing and thawing them is probably the next best thing! It prevents muffins from losing their fluffiness and enables you to enjoy them long into the future.

Here are the steps you need to take to freeze your muffins:

  1. Allow to Cool
Remove your muffins from the oven and leave them to cool on a work surface. Make sure theyā€™ve cooled completely before freezing them, as any residual condensation will ruin their texture during the freezing process.
  2. Wrap Individually
Once your muffins are completely cool, wrap each of them thoroughly in cling film (double wrapping is preferable).
  3. Place in a Suitable Container
Place your individually wrapped muffins in a Tupperware box or another suitable freezer-safe container.
  4. Label and Freeze
Fix the lid to the top of the container and write the date you baked the muffins, as well as their use by date with a Sharpie before placing the container in the freezer.

3 Tips for Freezing Muffins

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing muffins to have the best results:

  • Works for All Varieties – All muffin varieties freeze well, so it doesnā€™t matter which ingredients youā€™ve included. And because you wrap them individually before freezing, you can freeze lemon, chocolate, and blueberry muffins all in the same container!
  • Avoid Decorations – If youā€™re planning to top your muffins with any decorations or surplus ingredients, itā€™s better to do this once theyā€™ve been frozen and defrosted. Topping your muffins in advance can ruin their texture, and they can get damaged in the freezer. Check if your toppings are freezer-safe and freeze them alongside your muffins.
  • Reheat in the Microwave – If you enjoy slightly warm muffins that melt in your mouth, you can reheat them for up to ten seconds in the microwave once theyā€™ve been thawed. Be careful not to overheat them, though, as they could go soggy.

How Long Can You Freeze Muffins?

You can freeze muffins for around two months.

One of the biggest problems with homemade muffins is that they donā€™t stay fresh for very long, maybe one or two days at best. Covering and freezing them extends their shelf life considerably and will provide you with delicious muffins for up to two months after baking them.

How Do You Defrost Muffins?

The best way to defrost a muffin is to remove however many you need from their container in the freezer the night before you plan to enjoy it. You should place the muffin flat on a shelf in the fridge and leave it in its initial wrapping.

By the following day, your muffin will have thawed perfectly and will be ready to eat. If you enjoy eating your muffing while itā€™s warm, heat it in the microwave for up to ten seconds once it has been thawed.

Can You Refreeze Muffins?

Itā€™s perfectly safe to refreeze muffins that have been defrosted in the fridge. That being said, one of the best things about muffins is their fluffy and airy texture.

If you freeze muffins more than once, you risk ruining the texture and producing soggy muffins, something you surely want to avoid! By wrapping your muffins individually, you should be able to remove only what you need from the freezer, removing the need to refreeze them.

Do Muffins Freeze Well?

As long as your muffins are nice and fresh when you wrap and freeze them, you will find that they freeze extremely well. If you bake muffins at home, allow them to cool and get them straight into the freezer, so they will be super fresh when you come to thaw them at a later stage.

Also, remember to leave off any decorations or toppings from your muffins if you plan to freeze them, as these can affect your muffinā€™s texture during the freezing process.
