How To Freeze Melon

You can freeze melon in a couple of different ways and how you choose to do so will depend on how you plan to eat the melon afterwards:

How to Freeze Melon In Chunks

This method works best if you are planning to use melon in juices and smoothies. This leaves you with a bag of easy to use melon cubes or chunks and you can just grab a handful and add it right into your blender as you make the juice or smoothie.

There are a few steps to take to ensure your melon freezes well.

  1. Prepare: Wash and pat dry your melon then prepare it by removing any seeds and then cutting into small chunks approximately the size of an ice cube.

  1. Place Onto a Baking Tray: Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay out the cubes of melon on it. Make sure you keep the melon chunks separate from each other to avoid them sticking together.
Place Melon Chunks Onto a Tray
  1. Freeze: Pop the whole baking sheet into the freezer. Keep it flat and then freeze for about 6 hours.
  2. Bag Up: Take the melon chunks out of the freezer and pop them into a freezer-safe container.
Bag Melon Chunks Up
  1. Optionally Layer Up: If you want to make doubly sure your melon chunks donā€™t stick together then you can layer them up in the container by adding sheets of parchment paper between each layer.
  2. Freeze: Finally, place the container into the freezer.

How to Freeze Melon In Slices

If you plan on using frozen melon as a treat or a dessert then you can do it by following these few steps.

  1. Prepare: Wash, dry and prepare your melon by cutting out the seeds and cut into slices.
  2. Slice: Cut the sliced melon into triangles. You can either keep the skin on or remove it.
  3. Prepare a Tray: Grab a baking sheet and pop some parchment on the top.
  4. Freeze: Lay out the triangles of melon in a single layer. Pop this into the freezer and freeze for 6 to 8 hours.
  5. Bag Up: Take the baking sheet back out of the freezer and transfer the melon triangles into a freezer-safe container.
  6. Separate with Parchment Paper: You will need to layer the melon and put sheets of parchment in between each layer. This is to keep the melon from freezing together and it makes it much easier to grab out the amount of melon you need at a later date.
  7. Freeze: Pop this back into the freezer, ensuring you label the container with the date first.

How to Freeze Melon Puree

If you like pureed melon to add to juices, smoothies or to add to cooking then luckily you can freeze melon puree. The best way to freeze it is in handy ice cubes. This means you can grab out a cube or two of melon puree whenever you need.

  1. Puree: Obviously, start by pureeing your melon.
  2. Portion Into Ice Cubes: Find an ice cube tray and spoon the puree into each section. Make sure you leave a little room at the top of each ice cube section to allow it to expand.
  3. Freeze: Pop the tray into the freezer and freeze for a few hours.
  4. Bag Up
When the melon puree has frozen take the ice cube tray out of the freezer and transfer the cubes into a freezer-safe bag.
  5. Label and Freeze Label the bag and pop it in the freezer for about thirty minutes.
  6. Shake: Take the bag out and give it a gentle shake to stop the cubes from sticking together as much as possible.
  7. Freeze: Put the bag back in the freezer and freeze until you are ready.

3 Tips for Freezing Melon

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing melon to have the best results:

Create Mixed Fruit Bags
If you’re going to use frozen melon in a smoothie then why not create mixed bags of fruit. You can include mango, berries, grapes or kiwi. They all work great!

Use It Frozen in Smoothies
If you are going to use the melon in a smoothie then use the melon from frozen. It will keep your smoothie cold and refreshing.

Keep It Airtight
As with anything that is stored in the freezer, it is vital that you keep melon airtight so use good-quality freezer bags or Tupperware boxes.

How Long Can You Freeze Melon?

Melon keeps fairly well in the freezer for up to six months. After this, your melon might start to deteriorate or start to taste freezer burned.

Luckily six months is just the perfect amount of time to see you through the winter months until fresh melon comes back into season.

How Long Does Melon Last in the Fridge?

A whole, uncut melon will keep for around 10 days in the fridge. Once cut into chunks, it will only keep for 3 days or so.

How Do You Defrost Melon?

When it comes to melon and using it once it is frozen, the best advice is to not defrost it at all! The texture will have changed too much to use it in a thawed out state. Luckily using frozen melon is super easy.

Either eat it as it is as a frozen treat or throw it into a juice or smoothie to add flavour and a creamy texture.

Can You Refreeze Melon?

If you have thawed out your melon you are probably wanting to throw it away instead of using it and unfortunately, this is your best option. You shouldnā€™t try and refreeze it unless you have used it in a juice or smoothie.

You should be able to freeze the juice or smoothie safely but if there is any doubt about whether the melon has started to spoil or not then throw it away instead.

Does Melon Freeze Well?

This question all depends on what you are expecting to use the melon for! As a raw ingredient to freeze and thaw out again melon does not freeze well at all. The texture will have changed too much for it to be usable.

However, you donā€™t need to worry about thawing melon out at all to use as a dessert or in juices. Many people prefer frozen melon to fresh!

  1. All the frozen fruit direction require flash freezing. Not a big deal, except my freezer is full. Bags of fruit will do fine, but there is no way in the world to put cookie sheets in my freezer to do the flash freezing. I understand there are other methods, but the most common, and seemingly preferred method, is the flash freezing.

So of course, I’ll use the other methods, but to be honest, I don’t think I’ve had any problems when I just put the fruit in the freezer without any special prep.
