So, pick your favourite meat and make yourself up a batch of korma to eat. But, itā€™s easy to make too much. So, what do you do with the leftovers? Can you freeze korma?

The Quick Answer

Yes, you can freeze korma. Korma can be frozen for up to 3 months. This will depend on the meat and other ingredients you add but, as a general rule, you can pop it into suitable containers and add it to the freezer.

How to Freeze Korma

Freezing Korma is fairly easy to do, so you can easily cook up a batch for the freezer. All you need is some suitable containers or high-quality freezer bags, a permanent marker and a ladle!

  1. Cool
Cook up a batch of delicious korma and allow it to cool completely. You must allow it time to cool down because if you put hot items into the freezer, it can heat the air in the freezer and the food around it, leading to spoiling your food. This could even lead to you making yourself sick if any of the food spoils too much.
  2. Bag Up
Ladle the korma into containers or bags. Plan out how much you want in each portion first. You could portion it out into single person portions or family size portions. It all depends on how many people you feed in one go. If in doubt, always freeze in single-person portions. This allows you the most flexibility when it comes to defrosting the korma.
  3. Leave Gap
Donā€™t fill up the bag or container right to the bring. You need to leave an inch or two gap at the top because the korma will expand as it freezes.
  4. Seal
Seal the bags or containers tightly, and then add a label with the date and contents.
  5. Freeze
Pop the korma containers carefully into the freezer. Keep the containers upright until the korma has frozen completely, so it doesnā€™t spill.

How to Freeze Patak’s Korma Sauce

If you have leftover korma sauce, then you can freeze this too. Whether it’s bought from the shop or homemade. To be safe, you need to transfer any store-bought korma sauce from the glass jars into freezer-safe containers.

Glass jars may break and shatter in the freezer if they are overfilled, and you canā€™t be sure with an unopened jar of Patakā€™s korma sauce that there is enough space for it to expand as it freezes.

To freeze korma sauce, follow this method:

  1. Porion Out
Spoon the sauce into freezer-safe containers or freezer bags. If possible, get leak-proof containers or bags and make sure you can seal the lids tightly. You can either freeze the sauce in one go or divide it into portions and freeze separately.
  2. Seal
Seal the bags tightly or pop the lids onto the containers.
  3. Freeze
Label with the date and contents. Pop the sauce into the freezer.

4 Tips for Freezing Korma

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 4 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing korma to have the best results:

  • Use Fresh Ingredients – If you plan to freeze your korma make sure you only use fresh ingredients when cooking it. You want to be very careful that you don’t refreeze meats because this can lead to bacteria growth and could make you sick.
  • Batch Cook – Batch, cook your korma. This type of meal is perfect for freezer meals that you can grab out of the freezer on those evenings when you donā€™t have time to cook for yourself.
  • Portion Correctly – Divide out your korma into suitable portions. If you are likely to only be eating the korma on your own, then only freeze it in single portions. If more of you will be eating it together, you can freeze it in larger portions. Thinking about this upfront helps to reduce your food waste.
  • Tightly Seal – Make sure the lids fit tightly and that any food is sealed tightly. The air in the freezer can make food have that freezer burn taste, and making sure the containers are sealed helps reduce this.

How Long Can You Freeze Korma?

You should use up your korma within one to three months. After this, the food may start to degrade a little, affecting the food and quality. This should be plenty of time to use up these delicious meals.

You Can Freeze Korma for up to 6 Months

How Do You Defrost Korma?

The best and safest way to defrost korma is slowly and in the fridge. To do this, you can take it out of the freezer and pop it into a bowl. Put this into the fridge and allow it to thaw out overnight.

If you need to speed up the process, then you can defrost in the microwave. Pop it into a microwave-safe container and put it on a defrost setting for a couple of minutes. Stir the korma every couple of minutes and then pop it back in until it is thawed out.

If you are using this method, you need to ensure that you heat it and eat it immediately after thawing. This is because the korma can heat up to a temperature where bacteria can grow.

Can You Refreeze Korma?

No, once you have thawed out korma, then donā€™t try and refreeze it. If you have added meat to the korma, this meat can become unsafe to eat due to bacteria growth.

Once it has thawed out, eat it within a day or two. If there s any doubt, then throw the korma away rather than take the risk.

Does Korma Freeze Well?

Korma does freeze well. You shouldnā€™t even notice too much of a difference between fresh korma and frozen korma once it has been thawed out and heated up. You may notice a very slight change in taste and texture but not enough to spoil your enjoyment of the meal.
