3 minutes

Hard boiled eggs are a great source of protein and are a great snack option on gym days! And while they only take 10-15 minutes to prepare, itā€™s handy to have a supply of cooked eggs on hand when you need them.

Can You Freeze Hard Boiled Eggs?

Yes, you can freeze hard boiled eggs for up to 3 months but you should only freeze the yolk, as the egg whites turn rubbery after they have been frozen. To freeze them, pop the yolks out of the whites and place them in a sealed freezer bag.

How to Freeze Hard Boiled Eggs

Ultimately, thereā€™s nothing wrong with freezing an entire hard boiled egg. But the fact is that the whites wonā€™t taste good and will be rubbery after they have been frozen. Of course, if you’re happy with that textural change then freeze them…

You should only freeze the yolks, as they preserve their taste and texture when you put them in the freezer.

I explain how to safely freeze hard boiled eggs in the following steps.:

  1. Cool
Once you have boiled your eggs, place them in a pan of cold water so they cool quickly.
Cool Eggs
  1. Peel
When your eggs have cooled down, crack the shells and peel them until youā€™re left with the interior of your hard boiled eggs.
Peel
  1. Remove the Yolks
Itā€™s now time to remove the yolks from your egg whites. Pierce the whites with a knife and pop the yolks out, before leaving them to one side.
Remove the Yolks
  1. Bag Up
Place the yolks (and whites if you wish but remember the textural changes) into a freezer-safe bag and press out as much air as possible before sealing it.

  1. Label and Freeze
Write todayā€™s date on the front of the bag and the use by date. Remember, you can freeze hard-boiled eggs for around three months.

How Long Can You Freeze Hard Boiled Eggs?

You can freeze the yolks of hard boiled eggs for around three months. But as mentioned, you shouldnā€™t freeze the whites at all. If you want to preserve an entire egg, place it in a sealed container and leave it for up to two weeks.

You should avoid storing eggs at room temperature as harmful bacteria can grow and cause them to spoil.

Only leave them sitting out until theyā€™ve cooled sufficiently and can be placed in the fridge or freezer.

How Long Do Hard Boiled Eggs Last in the Fridge?

Hard boiled eggs will keep in the fridge for between 5 and 7 days. They should be kept in a covered bowl or Tupperware container.

How Do You Defrost Hard Boiled Eggs?

When youā€™re ready to enjoy your hard boiled eggs, remove them from the freezer and place them in the fridge. It will take several hours for your yolks to thaw completely, so be sure to leave yourself enough time before you plan to eat them.

You should avoid thawing hard boiled eggs at room temperature, and you shouldnā€™t put them in the microwave, either.

Can You Refreeze Hard Boiled Eggs?

No, you should only freeze hard boiled eggs once. If you were to freeze the yolk more than once, it would significantly alter its texture and may even affect its taste.

Freezing hard boiled eggs isnā€™t the best thing to do in the first place, so I certainly wouldnā€™t recommend doing it a second time.

If you want to keep a supply of hard boiled eggs on hand for any length of time, your best bet is to store them in the fridge.

Do Hard Boiled Eggs Freeze Well?

Itā€™s fair to say that hard boiled eggs donā€™t freeze very well. While you shouldnā€™t have any issues when you freeze hard boiled yolk, the whites will go rubbery and wonā€™t taste great.

With this in mind, unless you have to, I wouldnā€™t recommend freezing hard boiled eggs. Instead, keep them in a sealed container in the fridge for up to two weeks at a time.
