Buttery, sweet and smooth, fudge is an indulgent treat that you really need to consume in moderation. So what do you do when you’ve got fudge leftover that you can’t get through?

Can You Freeze Fudge?

Yes, you can freeze fudge for up to 6 months. It can be frozen as a large block or in individual pieces. It is vital that fudge is kept airtight in the freezer.

How to Freeze Fudge

There are actually two approaches you can take when it comes to freezing fudge, both of which we have gone through below:

How to Freeze a Block of Fudge

Freezing a whole block of fudge is the easiest (and best) approach to take. By keeping it as a whole block, you reduce the risk of freezer burn taking hold:

  1. Wrap: Wrap each block of fudge in plastic wrap tightly. If more than one block is being frozen, wrap each block in its own covering.
  2. Stack: Stack blocks on top of each other using wax paper between each one.
  3. Bag Up: Place individually wrapped blocks in a sealable freezer bag. Remove air and make the bag airtight.
  4. Freeze: Label and pop it in the freezer. Don’t put it near the top or by the doors as the temperature can fluctuate in these areas, and you need the temperature to remain constant.

How to Freeze Pieces of Fudge

If you have already cubed your fudge or have bought it cubed, then this is the only option you have:

  1. Wrap: Wrap fudge pieces tightly in plastic wrap, depending on preference or how many you want to defrost later.
  2. Bag Up: Place wrapped fudge in a plastic container or a resealable freezer bag. Remove the air to make the bag airtight.
  3. Freeze: Label and place in the back of the freezer in a spot where the same temperature can be maintained.

How to Freeze Flavoured Fudge

When it comes to flavouring fudge, you rarely use a lot of flavouring, so the impact on the freezing process is minimal.

In fact, the same can be said about fudge that contains other ingredients such as raisins. It will freeze just as well. All you need to do is use the same method we have used above for freezing flavoured fudge.

3 Tips for Freezing Fudge

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing fudge to have the best results:

Bigger is Better
If you can keep the fudge in larger blocks, then you reduce the risk of freezer burn.

Defrost Overnight
The only approach you should take when defrosting fudge is the slow, overnight method. This will ensure textural changes are kept to a minimum.

Label It
If you have frozen a few types of fudge, then make sure you label them with the flavour. Once frozen, it can be hard to tell the difference between the different flavours in the freezer.

How Long Can You Freeze Fudge?

It is recommended that if the fudge is commercially bought in its original wrapper and re-wrapped, it can be frozen for 3-6 months. You can freeze in blocks or pieces, but it needs double wrapping and kept at a constant temperature.

Homemade fudge can stay in the freezer for up to 3 months without compromising the texture or taste.

How Long Does Fudge Last in the Fridge?

When kept in an airtight container, fudge will last for around 3 weeks in the fridge.

How Do You Defrost Fudge?

There is one basic method to defrost fudge. It is not a fast process and is not something that can be done quickly. Defrosting fudge in the fridge overnight, leaving the fudge in its original wrapping is the simple answer.

The moisture that forms during defrosting will stick to the wrapping, not the fudge keeping the fudge from drying out.

Once the fudge is thawed, it can be left at room temperature for about 15 minutes and removed from the plastic wrapping to be eaten or put inside of a container to be served.

Most people eat cold fudge from the fridge with no problems too. The key thing to remember is to not try and quicken the process. You need to be patient and let the fudge thaw out slowly, or it could crystalise and lose the texture and flavour everyone loves.

Can You Refreeze Fudge?

Fudge is very sensitive and doesn’t like change, so when you freeze, thaw and refreeze, you break down a lot of the structure.

You’ll find that some of the moisture is drawn out, and therefore the fudge becomes dry and somewhat bland.

For this reason, we’d avoid refreezing fudge.

Does Fudge Freeze Well?

Fudge freezes perfectly when frozen within a few days of being made, properly wrapped twice and prepared correctly.

When thawed with its original wrapping to catch the moisture it produces when it’s being thawed, the taste and texture of the fudge is not harmed.

So be patient, and everything should be fine!

Freezer burn can compromise the taste of the fudge and dry out the fudge when it is defrosted, causing the creamy, rich fudge to become dry, but as long as you follow the steps above to freeze and thaw it, then you shouldn’t have too many problems.

If you’ve still got questions about freezing fudge or fudge in general, then these may help:

Can You Freeze Fudge to Set It?

This is not something we would recommend doing. Trying to speed up the setting process can ruin the overall texture. Instead, you’re better off taking your time with the setting process to have the best creamy fudge there is.

Can You Freeze Fudge That Contains Nuts?

Fudge can be frozen with any flavourings or fillings, including nuts, dried fruit and biscuit pieces. There may be a slight change in texture, but nothing dramatically noticeable.
