How to Freeze Eggnog

The fact that you can freeze eggnog without any issue means your Christmas drink can become a year-round drink! Instead of turning to the tea bags to warm up after a cold evening stroll, few things are as decadent as a rich and warming cup of eggnog!

To ensure your eggnog still tastes delicious, here are the steps you need to follow to freeze it correctly:

  1. Cool: If youā€™re making eggnog at home, remove it from the heat and pour it into a bowl. Then, cover the bowl with a paper towel and leave it to stand at room temperature for 1-2 hours. This will ensure your eggnog cools sufficiently before you proceed with the next steps.Ā
  2. Add to a Container: Pour your eggnog into a freezer-safe container – a Tupperware box or something similar should do the trick. At this stage, consider how you want to portion your eggnog, so you can easily remove the serving you need in future.
  3. Label and Freeze: Affix the lid to the container and write todayā€™s date and the use-by date on top. You can then place your eggnog in the freezer. Remember, you can freeze eggnog for around six months.

3 Tips for Freezing Eggnog

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing eggnog to have the best results:

Think About Portions
Before you freeze eggnog, we recommend separating it into smaller portion sizes. While you can freeze it all in one batch, doing so means you have to defrost it all at the same time. You could always freeze eggnog in individual freezer-safe bags before placing them inside a Tupperware box, as you can then easily remove one serving at a time.

Don’t Use Freezer Bags Alone
Itā€™s never a good idea to freeze a liquid solely in a freezer bag. The reason for this is that it can split, particularly if your bags arenā€™t high quality. If you decide to freeze your eggnog in bags, place the bags in a container before adding them to the freezer to protect them.

Reheat From Frozen
The good news is that you donā€™t need to thaw eggnog before reheating it. You can remove it from the freezer and heat it in the microwave until itā€™s piping hot. You will just need to stir it a few times to make sure it achieves the consistency that you desire.

How Long Can You Freeze Eggnog?

You can freeze eggnog for around six months. This is good to know because homemade eggnog only really lasts a day or two in the fridge before it starts to turn.

So, if youā€™ve made a batch of eggnog for the family at Christmas, weā€™d suggest freezing the eggnog as soon as it has cooled to ensure it doesnā€™t go bad in the fridge.

While you might be tempted to keep eggnog in the freezer for longer than six months, we would advise doing so. The ice crystals that form may cause the eggnog to dilute, causing it to taste less delicious!

How Long Does Eggnog Last in the Fridge?

Opened eggnog will last for up to 1 week in the fridge. However, if you have made it yourself then it will only last for up to 3 days in the fridge, unfortunately.

How Do You Defrost Eggnog?

You donā€™t need to defrost eggnog before reheating it. Simply empty the bag/container of eggnog into a bowl and warm it up in the microwave.

Alternatively, you can reheat eggnog on the stovetop. Whichever method you opt for, you will need to stir it at regular intervals to get your eggnog to the right consistency.

However, if you want to thaw your eggnog before reheating it, simply transfer it from the freezer to the fridge the night before you plan to enjoy it.

Eggnog Reheated

Can You Refreeze Eggnog?

Yes, you can refreeze eggnog.

If you have taken too much out of the freezer to enjoy at one time, add the eggnog to a fresh container and return it to the freezer.

However – a word of caution – the more times you do this, the less tasty your eggnog will be. As such, we recommend freezing your eggnog in smaller portions. This allows you to remove the required serving from the freezer and reduces your need to refreeze it.

Does Eggnog Freeze Well?

Eggnog freezes really well for up to six months.

You just need to remember to stir it while youā€™re reheating your eggnog to achieve that decadent, frothy texture. Given the fact that eggnog doesnā€™t keep for very long in the fridge, freezing it is a great alternative.
