How to Freeze Dijon Mustard

You can keep jars of Dijon mustard for nearly aĀ  year in the fridge, but if you are a stippler for use-by dates, you may want to freeze any leftover mustard to ensure it is preserved and can be used at a later date.

Follow the steps below for the best way to freeze Dijon mustard:Ā

  1. Spoon Into Ice Cube Trays
Spoon the mustard into the ice cube trays. One or two teaspoons should be more than enough and you often wonā€™t need any more than this in your recipes.
  2. Flash Freeze
Pop the trays into the freezer and leave to freeze. This could take 1-3 days for the mustard to fully freeze. You can leave the cubes like this indefinitely if you want to.
  3. Remove the Cubes
If you are going to want to use your ice cube tray for other things, you can remove the tray from the freezer and pop out the individual cubes.
  4. Bag Up
Put the individual frozen mustard cubes into a durable freezer-safe bag. Label the bag and date so you know what is inside and when best to use it by.
  5. Freeze
Place the bag into the freezer and freeze for up to a year.

3 Tips for Freezing Dijon Mustard

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing Dijon mustard to have the best results:

Keep the Tray Flat
When you first freeze the mustard, make sure your ice cube tray is flat otherwise the mustard could spill or freeze in uneven portions.

Ensure the Bags are Airtight
Storing your frozen mustard cubes in freezer bags or airtight containers is ideal to make them last as long as possible.

However, you have to ensure that the storage container you put your mustard in is truly air-free for this to be effective. Squeeze all the air out from the bottom to the top before you seal to prevent the contents from degrading.Ā

Consider the Fridge Instead
Unless you have bought Dijon mustard in bulk or use it very infrequently, it could be best to store the mustard in the fridge. It will last up to a year in the fridge and you can use it in even smaller amounts than if it were frozen.

How Long Can You Freeze Dijon Mustard?

Frozen Dijon mustard cubes will last for up to a year in the freezer, though it is best to use them within 3-6 months.

How Do You Defrost Dijon Mustard?

You can actually use frozen Dijon mustard straight out of the freezer, depending on what your recipe is.

Simply add a cube or two according to the recipe as if you were using them fresh and the heat will help them defrost.Ā

However, if you do want to thaw your frozen mustard cubes before you use them, it is really simple to do:

Place your mustard cubes in a bag or container, fill a bowl or the sink with warm water and place the container into the water. The warmth will help the cubes to defrost without affecting the taste or texture.

Alternatively, you can just leave the cubes out on a plate at room temperature and they will thaw by themselves.Ā

It is not advised to use a microwave to defrost Dijon mustard as this will lead to rapid water loss and will have an impact on the taste and texture of the mustard.

Can You Refreeze Dijon Mustard?

Ideally not, though it is possible. This is why freezing in individual portions using the ice cube tray is so helpful as it should help you avoid needing to refreeze food products, and also reduce your food waste.

Does Dijon Mustard Freeze Well?

Yes, Dijon mustard will typically freeze well as long as the right steps are taken to freeze it correctly. Freezing it for the initial 1-3 days is a crucial step and should not be skipped, and then keeping the cubes in an airtight container will ensure they are preserved.

Freezing Dijon mustard will allow you to have fresh, flavorful additions to your sauces and dishes at any given time.
