3 Tips for Freezing Crumble Mix

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing crumble mix to have the best results:

Work Out Portions
Consider the size of crumble you normally make and then freeze crumble mix in those portions. Grab the dish you normally use and sprinkle in the mix so you know how much one dish requires then portion into bags, weighing as you do so.

Give the Bag a Shake
After freezing then defrosting, you may find that some of the crumble mix has clumped together. Give it a gentle shake or tap against the worktop to break some of the pieces up.

Add Oats
Oats freeze well and will ensure you have a nutty, crunch texture in your crumble after freezing and defrosting it.

How Long Can You Freeze Crumble Mix?

Crumble mix won’t keep well for an extended time in the freezer. After about three months it is likely to start forming crystals in the mix which can reduce the crunchiness of the texture.

So, if you want to eat your crumble mix while it is still at its best then use it within three months.

The same timescale applies to a crumble mix with added oats or nuts.

How Do You Defrost Crumble Mix?

If freezing your crumble mix is super easy, then using it once you have frozen it is even easier! You don’t even need to defrost it if you are cooking it. Just add it to your chosen fruit and bake from frozen.

Your crumble should have maintained its crumbliness in the freezer but on some occasions, you might find that it has frozen into hard lumps. This isn’t a problem, you just need to tap the freezer bag gently on the kitchen counter and the lumps should break up.

Can You Refreeze Crumble Mix?

Once you have frozen and then thawed out your crumble mix then it is best to use it all up and not refreeze it. The more times you freeze it, the more chance there is for crystals to form and spoil the texture and the taste of the crumble.

You may be able to get away with freezing it again if you have added it to fruit and baked it to make a crumble dessert. Just be aware that the texture and taste just won’t be quite the same as it was when it was freshly baked.

Does Crumble Mix Freeze Well?

Crumble mix is one of those food items that does freeze well. If the bag is airtight and well-sealed then you shouldn’t notice too much difference at all between frozen and fresh crumble mix.

If there is any difference at all then it will be the texture that has changed to be a little less crunchy than you might like. If this happens then you can always toast the crumble mix for a few minutes to crisp it up again.

If you are baking the crumble mix then this should do this for you.
