Home bakers like to make cream cakes in batches, and if there’s too many to enjoy in one sitting, it’s important you know how to preserve them for future use. So can you freeze cream cakes? And do they freeze well or not?

The Quick Answer

Yes, you can freeze cream cakes. Cream cakes can be frozen for around 1 month, whether you’ve made them yourself or if they’re shop bought. Cream cakes covered with chocolate and most other toppings are suitable for freezing, too.

How to Freeze Cream Cakes

You’ll be pleased to hear that there’s nothing overly complicated about freezing cream cakes.

The biggest danger to watch out for during the process is freezer burn, so you need to make sure your cakes are tightly wrapped. Here are the simple steps you need to follow:

  1. Wrap cakes individually: Carefully wrap each individual cream cake with cling film. You should double wrap them to protect them from freezer burn, and it’s not a good idea to wrap them together. Doing so can cause them to stick together in the freezer.
  2. Place in a Tupperware box: Place your individually wrapped cream cakes inside a Tupperware box. This protects the cakes from any damage when in the freezer, as cream cakes tend to be fragile.
  3. Label and freeze: Write the date that you prepared the cream cakes (if they’re homemade), as well as the use-by date on top of the box. Then transfer them to the freezer. Remember, you can freeze cream cakes for up to one month.

3 Tips for Freezing Cream Cakes

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing cream cakes to have the best results:

  • Only Use Double Cream – You should only freeze cakes that have been made with double cream. And you should ensure it has been whipped before freezing. Single cream doesn’t freeze well and can spoil.
  • Double Wrap – Always double wrap your cream cakes before freezing. We also recommend storing them inside a Tupperware box when you place them in the freezer, to protect them from damage from other foods.
  • Top After Freezing – If your cream cakes are homemade, we recommend topping them after freezing them if you so desire. While most cream cake toppings freeze well, delicate decorations can be spoiled from handling your cakes when you freeze them.

How Long Can You Freeze Cream Cakes?

You can freeze cream cakes for around one month.

We wouldn’t recommend freezing cream cakes any longer than this, as you run the risk of the cream spoiling. It’s also best to freeze them when they’re super fresh, so try and freeze them on the day that you’ve bought or baked them.

If you put a stale cream cake in the freezer, it will still be stale when it’s defrosted!

You Can Freeze Cream Cakes for up to 6 Months

How Do You Defrost Cream Cakes?

You should defrost cream cakes by removing them from the freezer and placing them in the fridge. They should then be ready to enjoy within 4-6 hours. Don’t defrost cream cakes on the countertop.

Due to their high dairy content, cream cakes defrosted at room temperature can spoil. You should also avoid defrosting your cream cakes in the microwave.

Can You Refreeze Cream Cakes?

No. Cream cakes shouldn’t be refrozen. The pastry can easily go soggy after being refrozen, and you risk the cream spoiling. The reason we advise you to freeze the cream cakes individually is to ensure that you can take only what you need out of the freezer.

If you know you’re not likely to finish a whole cream cake to yourself, by all means, slice it into portions before you freeze it initially.

This will save you from taking it all out at once and wasting what you don’t eat.

Do Cream Cakes Freeze Well?

Generally speaking, cream cakes freeze well. Just make sure they’re double wrapped and properly stored, and you should have absolutely no problem at all. Y

ou should also make sure you only freeze ones that have been made with whipped, double cream, as single cream doesn’t freeze well.

So, whether you like to enjoy a cream cake once in a while with a cup of tea, or if you’re preparing an extra special dessert for a special occasion, you can be sure that cream cakes will freeze and keep perfectly well.
