Coronation chicken is one of those food items that people seem to get or hate. If you’re someone who loves it then perhaps you’re wondering can you freeze coronation chicken?

Coronation chicken can be frozen for around 3 weeks. The best way to freeze coronation chicken is to keep the cooked chicken in the freezer and then make the coronation dressing fresh.

If you do want to give freezing this dish a go then you can follow these instructions, Just be aware that your thawed out coronation chicken wonā€™t be as nice as it originally was.

For best results freeze your chicken on its own and make the coronation dressing fresh on the day. If you’re instant on freezing coronation chicken then here’s what you need to do:

  1. Grab Bags or Containers
    Prepare yourself some portion sized freezer bags or airtight containers.
  2. Label and Portion
    Add a label and then pop the coronation chicken into the bag or pot.
  3. Seal
    Leave yourself some space at the top in case it expands and seal the bags up tight removing as much air as possible. 
  4. Freeze
    Place it into the freezer.

If you have frozen the chicken on its own and plan to make the coronation dressing fresh when you need it then you can freeze the chicken alone for up to three months.

How Do You Defrost Coronation Chicken?

When it comes to defrosting this dish the best chance you have for an edible result is to allow it to thaw out very slowly. So pop the container or bag into the fridge and allow it to defrost slowly for a few hours or overnight.

If you have followed the advice to freeze only the cooked chicken then the same process applies, Just pop the frozen chicken into the fridge and let it thaw out slowly.

Can You Refreeze Coronation Chicken?

Unfortunately, coronation chicken doesn’t freeze well once. Trying to freeze it twice would be a disaster. Unfortunately, the dressing will become split, grainy and oily making it unappetising. 

Refreezing meat is also not advised as harmful bacteria can form quite easily. 

Does Coronation Chicken Freeze Well?

No, this is a dish that does not freeze well at all. In fact, it isnā€™t recommended to try. The chicken is fine to freeze. You can freeze that part of the dish easily and make the dressing fresh when you plan to use it.

If you do freeze the coronation dressing then you are likely to find that the mayonnaise has separated and become a mixture of watery, clumpy and even gloopy! Not an attractive texture to eat.

We would, instead, recommend that you make this dish fresh for when you need it using thawed, cooked chicken.
