For a sweet treat, bake yourself some fresh cinnamon rolls. These are sweet, spiced with cinnamon and covered in a drizzle of frosting and are the perfect treat or dessert.

While you are baking it might be worth making a few extra to pop into the freezer for later which is why we are wondering, can you freeze cinnamon rolls?

Cinnamon rolls can be frozen for up to 8 weeks. It is best to freeze them unbaked and then bake once you have thawed. Freezing them this way means you will never know the difference between fresh and frozen cinnamon rolls.

How to Freeze Cinnamon Rolls

Freezing cinnamon rolls successfully can be a little tricky, but mostly because you have to freeze them at the right stage in the making process. You want to freeze them before they are baked, but after you have allowed the dough to rise a little.

This means you can take them out of the freezer and then bake them for freshly baked cinnamon rolls that taste just as good as any fresh cinnamon rolls.

  1. Prepare
Prepare your batch of cinnamon rolls. Use your favourite recipe and follow every step up until the point you would bake the cinnamon rolls.
  2. Par Bake
Pop the cinnamon rolls into the oven to par-bake. This should only take about ten to fifteen minutes. You want the rolls to have just started to rise and take their form, but you don’t want any browning to have started.
  3. Cool
Take the cinnamon rolls out of the oven and pop them onto a cooling tray. Allow them to cool completely before moving to the next step.
  4. Wrap
Wrap the cinnamon rolls in two layers of cling film. You want to keep them as airtight as possible. You can also add a third layer of tin foil to add a little extra protection.
  5. Bag Up
Pop the cinnamon rolls into a freezer bag and seal tightly.
  6. Freeze
Label the bag with the date and contents and pop the bag of cinnamon rolls into the freezer.

How to Freeze Cinnamon Roll Dough

You can freeze cinnamon roll dough too. This is an alternative to par-baking your cinnamon rolls.

  1. Make Dough
Make your dough and shape it into cinnamon rolls using your favourite recipe
  2. Wrap
Wrap the cinnamon rolls in cling film. You want at least two layers to protect them from the air.
  3. Freeze Once
Put the wrapped rolls onto a baking tray and put this into the freezer for a couple of hours. This helps the rolls to retain their shape and avoid being damaged in the freezer.
  4. Bag Up
Transfer the now frozen rolls into a freezer bag.
  5. Freeze Again
Seal the bag tightly and label it with the date and contents.

3 Tips for Freezing Cinnamon Rolls

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing cinnamon rolls to have the best results:

Keep Them Airtight
The secret to keeping your cinnamon rolls as fresh and delicious tasting as possible is keeping them airtight. This is why wrapping them in several layers of cling film is so important.

Freeze in the Pan
If you are short on time, then you can freeze your uncooked cinnamon rolls in the pan you plan to bake them in! Make and pop them into the pan. Wrap the whole pan in several layers of cling film and pop it into the freezer.

Use Them Quickly
Don’t forget to watch the time. Your cinnamon rolls won’t keep for long, even in the freezer, so make sure you plan to use them up before their flavour starts to degrade.

How Long Can You Freeze Cinnamon Rolls?

Unfortunately, cinnamon rolls don’t keep for too long in the freezer. You should aim to use them within 6 to 8 weeks. After this, the taste and quality of the cinnamon rolls will degrade, and they won’t taste as good.

You Can Freeze Cinnamon Rolls for up to 2 Months

How Do You Defrost Cinnamon Rolls?

The best way to use your frozen cinnamon rolls is to thaw them out fully before baking them. Take your cinnamon rolls out of the freezer and pop them into the fridge overnight. By the morning, they should have thawed out, and you are ready to bake.

Can You Refreeze Cinnamon Rolls?

You shouldn’t refreeze any cinnamon rolls that have been defrosted and baked. The quality won’t be the same, and it would be a shame to spoil them. This is a great excuse to eat them rather than allow them to go to waste.

Do Cinnamon Rolls Freeze Well?

Cinnamon rolls do freeze well as long as you use the above method and freeze them unbaked and ready to pop into the oven to bake after they are thawed out.

This method ensures that the cinnamon rolls taste freshly baked, and you can avoid getting that freezer burn taste that many baked goods can suffer with.

  1. Does the type of yeast matter? My recipe calls for quick rise yeast. When I unfreeze them will it still rise properly using your first method of freezing?

  2. Well, I par-baked as suggested for 10 min on 350, and when I tried to “pop” them out of the pan to cool, they were all stuck together and still doughy. I couldn’t separate them. Once cooled, I turned out the whole thing (all stuck together) and wrapped it together. Hope this works when I want to thaw and bake fully next week 🙁

    • Sorry that happened. I wouldn’t par bake any bread. I would freeze them and pull out to thaw, rise and bake as directed.

      Just my own kitchen experience.
