How to Freeze Churros
Although they donāt last as long as some other snacks in the freezer, you can rest assured that your churros can be frozen safely. We would recommend you cook them first and then freeze them, but as has been mentioned, you can freeze the dough if you prefer. The steps below take you through how to freeze cooked churros.
- Allow to Cool
You shouldnāt attempt to freeze churros until theyāve cooled to room temperature. You should place them on a baking tray and leave them aside to cool. This wonāt take more than a couple of hours. - Wrap Individually
You will need to wrap each of your churros individually to ensure they donāt stick together when you put them in the freezer. The best approach here is to double wrap each churro with cling film and place each of them on a tray. - Freeze Initially
Transfer the churros on the tray into the freezer and allow to freeze. This should take 3-4 hours. When theyāre frozen, remove the tray from the freezer. - Place in a Freezer Bag
To save yourself on freezer space, when your churros are frozen solid, you can transfer them into an airtight, freezer-safe bag. This way, they wonāt stick together. - Label and Return to the Freezer
Write the date that you prepared the churros, as well as the use-by date. Remember, churros can be frozen after being cooked for around one month.
How to Freeze Churros Batter
If you would prefer, you can freeze uncooked churro dough. To do this, you will have to shape the churros and leave the dough to rest for a short while (maybe thirty minutes).
When the batter is hard and the churros have lost some of their stickiness, you can then wrap them individually and follow the same instructions as above.
3 Tips for Freezing Churros
Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing churros to have the best results:
- Cooked Freezes Better – Although itās perfectly safe to freeze both uncooked and cooked churros, we would recommend cooking them first and then freezing them. Why? Mainly because they can be frozen for longer when cooked, and also because you donāt have to struggle with sticky fingers when it comes to getting the dough to freeze.
- Warm Through – When it comes to reheating your churros, the best way to get the perfect texture is to warm them in the oven for 10-15 minutes. You should allow them to thaw before reheating them in the oven.
- Don’t Store in the Fridge – Itās not a good idea to store your churros in the fridge, as they will go soft, and this will take away their crunchiness. If you donāt plan on eating your churros on the day you make them, itās best to prepare the leftovers for the freezer and skip the fridge altogether.
How Long Can You Freeze Churros?
You can freeze churros for around one month.
Churro dough will be okay for a couple of weeks if you decide to store it when itās uncooked. Bear in mind that the longer you leave churros to sit on the counter, the softer they get. As such, itās a good idea to get them straight in the freezer as soon as youāve cooked them.
You Can Freeze Churros for up to 1 Month
How Do You Defrost Churros?
Donāt defrost your cooked churros in the fridge, as they will go soft and may even turn soggy. Remove them from the freezer and lay them on the counter until they reach room temperature. You should then oven bake them for best results and to enjoy that crispy sensation!
If youāre defrosting uncooked churros, you should put them in the fridge the night before you plan to use them. You can then prepare your churros in any way that you see fit but frying the dough will produce the best churros!
Can You Refreeze Churros?
Although itās safe to refreeze churro batter after it has been thawed, we wouldnāt advise it. You shouldnāt refreeze your cooked churros after leaving them to defrost on the countertop, either.
By individually wrapping your churros and only removing what you need, you wonāt have to worry about refreezing them.
Do Churros Freeze Well?
Although they canāt be frozen for a long time, churros actually freeze pretty well. Of course, the best way to enjoy churros is to make them fresh, but we donāt always have the time to prepare the dough and cook them up!
Freezing them is an ideal way of keeping some churros on hand for any time that you get cravings for this delicious snack!
