How To Freeze Chocolate Chips

Freezing chocolate chips is pretty easy to do. The hard part is ensuring they donā€™t all stick together in a clump when frozen. This is, therefore, the best method to freeze chocolate chips.

  1. Grab Container
If you have unopened packets of chocolate chips you can freeze them in the packet as long as it has been unopened. If your chocolate chip packet is open or you have made your own then you need to grab yourself an airtight container or a freezer bag that can be sealed tightly.
  2. Portion Out
Pour the chocolate chips into the freezer bag or container. If you prefer then you can separate them out into portions. Put each portion into a separate bag or container.
  3. Seal
Pop the lid on the container or if you have chosen to freeze in freezer bags then squeeze out as much air as you can and seal the bag tightly.
  4. Freeze
Label with the date and contents. Put the chocolate chips into the freezer. Place them near the top or somewhere you can easily access them as you need to grab them out again. Freeze for about half an hour.
  5. Shake Them
After thirty minutes, you need to grab the chocolate chips and give the bag or container a gentle shake to separate out the chips. This helps them not to stick together too much in the freezer.
  6. Return to the Freezer
Once you have done this put them back into the freezer until you need them again.

How to Freeze Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

If you have already used your chocolate chips in a delicious cookie dough but donā€™t actually want to bake it all then you can freeze the cookie dough. Itā€™s easy to do, just follow this method.

  1. Make and Roll
Make your cookie dough and roll it up into a ball. If you want to you can separate it out into portion size balls instead of one large dough ball.
  2. Wrap
Wrap the cookie dough balls well in cling film. You need at least two layers.
  3. Wrap Again
Add a layer of tin foil and pop it into a freezer bag.
  4. Freeze
Label the bag with the date and name and put it in the freezer.

3 Tips for Freezing Chocolate Chips

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing chocolate chips to have the best results:

  • Melt Them – There is a risk that chocolate chips will lose some texture when frozen. Using previously frozen chocolate chips as decoration may not be the best approach. However, they will work great melted or baked into goods.
  • Freeze in Portions – Consider the portion sizes you normally use and freeze in containers of this size. This will make it far easier to thaw the right amount at a given time.
  • Works for All Chips – Whether you’ve got white, milk or dark chocolate chips, the method remains the same. You can even try freezing a mix of all three types of chocolate chips if you plan on making mixed triple chocolate cooking, for example.

How Do You Defrost Chocolate Chips?

When it comes to thawing out the chocolate chips you want to take care. Drastic temperature changes can make the chocolate texture change and deteriorate. So take it out of the freezer and pop it into the fridge to defrost.

From the fridge, you can take them out and put them on the kitchen side for a short while to allow it to come up to room temperature.

Another option if you are planning on eating the chocolate chips is to eat them frozen! Just be careful not to hurt your teeth too much because the chocolate will be very hard.

Can You Refreeze Chocolate Chips?

Whilst chocolate is a relatively safe product to freeze you do still need to take care and this is why we wouldnā€™t recommend that you refreeze it.

Even though you can successfully freeze chocolate there will be some texture and taste degradation and if you keep changing the temperature of the chocolate drastically it will suffer.

Do Chocolate Chips Freeze Well?

Chocolate chips do freeze well and only suffer from minimal changes to texture. You should find that the taste of the chocolate doesnā€™t change at all. So there is no excuse for any chocolate to ever go to waste.
