How to Freeze Cheese Scones

Homemade cheese scones are delightful, particularly when they’re fresh out of the oven! Add a dollop of butter to your scone and it will just melt in your mouth. Perfection.

If you’ve made a decent batch of scones, you can set some aside and freeze them for a later date, by following the simple steps listed below:

  1. Cool
Once you’ve baked your scones for the necessary time as stipulated in your recipe, remove them from the oven and place them on a cooling rack. It’s really important you allow them to cool sufficiently before freezing, as they will go soggy if you freeze them while they’re still warm.
  2. Wrap Individually
Tightly wrap each of your cheese scones in cling film or tin foil. Be careful when doing so, as you don’t want any gaps in your wrapping, as they will let in air and result in freezer burn, which can cause the cheese scones to dry out.
  3. Place in a Container
Transfer your individually wrapped cheese scones to an airtight container, and seal the lid. If you’re short of space, you can use a freezer-safe bag instead.
  4. Label and Freeze
Write today’s date, as well as the suggested use-by date of the cheese scones on the lid of your box. Remember, you can freeze cheese scones for around three months.

3 Tips for Freezing Cheese Scones

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing cheese scones to have the best results:

  • Don’t Mix Sweet and Savoury – Some home bakers prepare cheese scones alongside regular scones, as the recipes are very similar. If you do this, make sure you’re careful not to mix the two together! When frozen, cheese scones will look a lot like regular scones, so be sure to add them to separate containers if you’ve made the batches alongside one another.
  • Serve Warm – Cheese scones are best served warm. So, when you’ve allowed them to thaw in the fridge, be sure to put them in the oven or microwave so they’re nice and hot before serving. Trust us, you will be pleased you went to the effort!
  • Freeze Plain – If you’re planning to freeze cheese scones, avoid adding toppings or fillings before you freeze them. Certain fillings can cause the centre of the scones to go soggy, so you should freeze additional fillings separately if appropriate.

How Long Can You Freeze Cheese Scones?

You can freeze cheese scones for around three months.

While scones will keep in the fridge for a couple of days after they’ve been baked, they will start to dry out quickly. And it’s not always easy to tell if a scone is dry until you cut it open!

So, if you know in advance that you plan to freeze cheese scones, get them in the freezer as soon as they’ve cooled for best results.

How Do You Defrost Cheese Scones?

The best way to defrost cheese scones is to remove them from the freezer the night before you plan to enjoy them. Transfer them to the fridge and allow them to thaw in their current packaging. Then, when they’re nice and soft, we recommend heating them before serving.

Cheese scones heat much better in the oven than in the microwave, as the latter can cause them to go soggy if you overheat them. You will need to ensure that your cheese scones have defrosted fully before you reheat them.

Can You Refreeze Cheese Scones?

It’s perfectly safe to refreeze cheese scones that have been defrosted in the fridge. That being said, it’s not advisable. The multiple changes in moisture content can cause your cheese scones to dry out, so the more you freeze and thaw them, the more you risk ruining their texture.

Because you have wrapped your cheese scones individually, you should be able to remove the required amount of scones for each serving.

Do Cheese Scones Freeze Well?

Cheese scones, like regular scones, freeze extremely well. The biggest challenge you face when freezing scones is that if they’re not well wrapped, they can dry out and become stale.

So, by double-wrapping cheese scones in cling film and then placing them in a freezer-safe box, you should encounter absolutely no issues when freezing cheese scones.
