How to Freeze Camembert Cheese
Before we get started explaining how to go about freezing it, you need to ensure you have the best cheese possible. Don’t try and salvage some dodgy-looking camembert. Instead, get the best you possibly can.
It needs to be completely intact with no external cracks or dry patches. Also, check the best before date and make sure your cheese is not beyond that date.
If you find the cheese is quite soft, then leave it in the fridge for a few days to allow it to ripen and harden a little.
Once you’ve got the best cheese you can, you can get to freezing it:
- Portion Camembert: So that you can grab a piece of cheese as and when you need it from the freezer, you will first want to portion the camembert into wedges. Cut your cheese into wedges weighing roughly 200 grams each.
- Wrap Them: Wrap each piece in a layer of foil, followed by a layer of clingfilm. You don’t want to stink your freezer out with the smell of cheese! Imagine grabbing an ice cube for a refreshing drink only to discover it tastes like cheese…
- Bag and Freeze: Place your cheese wedges into a freezer bag for a further layer of protection, and place the bag in the freezer. Be careful when placing the bag in the freezer as you don’t want your cheese to get crushed by other items.
That’s all there is to it to freeze camembert.
3 Tips for Freezing Camembert Cheese
Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing camembert to have the best results:
Avoid Doing So
Unfortunately, camembert cheese does not freeze well at all. There will be a hugely noticeable change in the texture and structure. Where possible, avoid freezing it at all.
Cook It
If you have frozen it, then it’s a good idea to cook with it. Eating neat and raw will be unpleasant, so try to incorporate it into another dish.
Use It Quickly
The longer it is in the freezer, the greater the breakdown will be. Try to limit the period of time it is kept in the freezer.
How Long Can You Freeze Camembert Cheese?
You can freeze your camembert cheese for as long as you want – in theory.
The major issue is that the longer you freeze it, the more degraded the texture will become. There is also an increased chance you’ll lose some of the flavour. That’s why we would recommend freezing camembert for a maximum of 3 months.
Soft cheese, like camembert, will last for around 2 weeks in the fridge. It should be wrapped in baking paper, parchment paper or wax paper but reasonably loosely.
How Do You Defrost Camembert Cheese?
Unfortunately, you’ll need A LOT of patience when defrosting camembert cheese. Slow and steady is the way to go with defrosting it. Take the cheese you need out of the freezer and place the wedges in a bowl.
Place the bowl in the fridge and give it at least 24 hours to defrost. If you give it closer to 48 hours, that would be even better.
Once softened, carefully remove the layers of protection from it. There is a small chance that the foil has got caught in the body of the cheese, so do this carefully as you don’t want to find yourself (or your guests) chewing on a piece of foil.
If you’re desperate to eat your camembert, or perhaps you forgot to get it out of the freezer in time, then you can try and use the defrost function on your microwave. You will end up ruining some of the texture, but you risk ruining the flavour.
If you can, try and be as prepared as possible and get that camembert out of the freezer a day or two in advance.
Try and use your camembert as soon as you can after defrosting. It will keep fine in the fridge for an additional 3 days.
We recommend slowly defrosting the camembert in the fridge overnight before cooking it. This will prevent the inside from remaining frozen when cooking it.
Can You Refreeze Camembert Cheese?
No! Don’t do it! If you refreeze camembert, you will decimate the texture.
You’ll already have significant issues with the texture of your cheese if you choose to freeze it just once. Doing so for a second time will completely ruin it.
Does Camembert Cheese Freeze Well?
If you’re looking at the taste and texture alone, then fresh is 100% better. The problem with freezing is that your camembert can become crumbly and/or rubbery regardless of how hard you try to freeze it.
There is also a risk that the camembert will lose some of its flavour when it is frozen – whether it’s frozen for a month or half a year.
However, freezing camembert does allow you to stock up, avoid waste and keep your camembert safe for several months. If you plan on melting your camembert or turning it into a dip, then freezing it will work fine.
Don’t serve it to a cheese connoisseur who will know you’ve frozen it immediately.

Breaded camembert can be frozen. Freeze the pieces of breaded camembert on a baking tray until solid before bagging them up for the long term. This is one of the better ways to freeze camembert.
This is not a good idea. You’ll have significant issues with the texture. Once defrosted, it will need to be warmed back up, which can ruin the texture further.
