How to Freeze Bourbon Balls

When you freeze bourbon balls, your best first step is to make sure that theyā€™re not sticky or tacky on the outermost surface.

For some recipes, thatā€™s exceptionally unlikely, as theyā€™re rolled in icing sugar. However, some recipes call for a softer, sticky outer coating. Weā€™d recommend avoiding that in your freezer, as it will make the thawing process much trickier.

Here’s our full method for freezing bourbon balls:

  1. Rolling in Icing Sugar: Therefore, roll the bourbon balls in icing sugar to make the final outside finish less sticky.
  2. Bag Up: Move them into a large freezer bag, ensuring a little space around the balls so that theyā€™re not crushed when the bag is sealed shut.
  3. Seal: Remove as much excess air as possible, and seal the bag. We recommend removing excess air here, as it will allow for the balls not to become stale as they freeze.
  4. Label and Freeze: When the bag is sealed, the bourbon balls are ready for freezing. Label them with the correct date, and then place the bag into the freezer, where they will be safe for around three months.

3 Tips for Freezing Bourbon Balls

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing bourbon balls to have the best results:

The Bourbon Won’t Freeze!
Something to remember here is that the bourbon in your bourbon balls wonā€™t freeze since itā€™s alcoholic. Therefore, the best course of action is to simply forget this, as the chocolate surrounding the balls will keep the bourbon contained. If there is an accident and some of the balls get crushed, a small pool may form in the bag.

Roll In Icing Sugar
Rolling the bourbon balls in icing sugar is a great way to prevent the final finish of the balls from being too sticky. This is important as it means that they wonā€™t stick together too readily in the freezer, making thawing them out quickly virtually impossible.

Seal Tightly
When the ingredients are in a moist environment, it becomes more and more likely that they will go stale and soft. This makes the treats less enjoyable, so we recommend sealing the bag completely to prevent too much moisture from getting into the bag itself.Ā

How Long Can You Freeze Bourbon Balls?

You can freeze bourbon balls in your freezer for around 3 months. This is around the average time that most things can be frozen for, and we would suggest against extending this time.

The reasoning is simple – bourbon balls contain a lot of air, and this air will, over time, condense and freeze. This will lead to freezer burn if itā€™s allowed to continue for an extended period of over three months.

How Long Do Bourbon Balls Last in the Fridge?

Bourbon balls will keep for around 2 weeks in the fridge. They should be kept in a Tupperware container to keep them moist.

How Do You Defrost Bourbon Balls?

The best way to defrost bourbon balls is to transfer the entire bag to the fridge and allow them to thaw overnight.

We advise against keeping them on the counter, as the chocolate within and throughout them will likely melt, leading to a messy final result.

Can You Refreeze Bourbon Balls?

Yes, you can refreeze bourbon balls. The best way to do this is to place them back into a properly sealed bag as frozen before and transfer them back into the freezer.

Do Bourbon Balls Freeze Well?

Yes, bourbon balls do freeze quite well – the reason for this is that thereā€™s little to no water in them that could swell and damage the texture of the bourbon balls.

If youā€™ve still got questions about freezing bourbon balls or bourbon balls in general, then these may help:

Do Bourbon Balls Get You Drunk?

Although bourbon balls contain alcohol, they are combined with other ingredients making the alcohol content low. You would need to consume a lot of bourbon balls to get remotely drunk.

What is the Best Way to Store Bourbon Balls?

If you plan on eating the bourbon balls up within a few days then they can be kept in an airtight container on the worktop or in the fridge. If you need to store them for longer, then the freezer is best.
