Whether youā€™ve whipped up a delicious batch yourself or bought some from your local supermarket, blue cheese dressing is a delicious addition to salads and pasta dishes. Itā€™s creamy and comes with a kick, making it a great option when compared to salad cream or mayonnaise. But whatā€™s the best way to preserve it?

Can You Freeze Blue Cheese Dressing?

No, you should not freeze blue cheese dressing. While itā€™s possible to freeze blue cheese dressing, we wouldnā€™t recommend doing so. This is because the dressing contains dairy, and it will split during the freezing process. When you come to thaw it, itā€™s really difficult to get it back to the desired consistency.

Why You Shouldn’t Freeze Blue Cheese Dressing

Blue cheese dressing consists of various ingredients that donā€™t freeze particularly well – blue cheese and mayonnaise being two of them. If you place blue cheese dressing in the freezer, it will split.

This renders it far from ideal for drizzling on your salad, as itā€™s extremely difficult to bring the dressing back to the desired consistency once you have already frozen it.

So, while other salad dressings can be frozen, we would advise against adding blue cheese dressing to the freezer. Itā€™s much better to buy smaller portions and keep them in the fridge, as opposed to buying the dressing in bulk and needing to preserve it in the freezer.

How to Store Blue Cheese Dressing

The best way to store blue cheese dressing is in the fridge. As soon as you have prepared a batch at home, add it to sealable jars or bottles and place it in the fridge right away.

Your dressing should be good for at least a month before you need to use it.

If you have bought blue cheese dressing from the supermarket, you should still store it in the fridge. You will need to check the use-by date on the neck of the bottle to get a clear idea of when to use it. Note that the use-by date will be different once it has been opened, so bear this in mind.

You should never store blue cheese dressing that has been opened at room temperature, as it will quickly spoil.

Does Blue Cheese Dressing Freeze Well?

Unfortunately, blue cheese dressing doesnā€™t freeze well at all. This is because it splits when you place it in the freezer, meaning you canā€™t then use it as a dressing for your favourite salad or pasta dish.

As mentioned above, the best way to preserve blue cheese dressing is to seal it and place it in the fridge, where it should be good for around one month before you need to use it up.

If youā€™ve still got questions about freezing blue cheese dressing or blue cheese in general, then these may help:

Can You Freeze Blue Cheese Sauce?

Blue cheese sauce can be frozen but it really does depend on the dairy content. If there is cream or creme fraiche in the sauce then it will split when it thaws, ruining the texture.

How Long Does Blue Cheese Dressing Last in the Fridge?

In the fridge, blue cheese dressing will actually keep for around 1 month if it is kept in a sealed jar. It’s vital that you keep it airtight.
