How to Freeze Apple Muffins

Freezing apple muffins, as with most things we talk about on this site, isnā€™t as simple as you might think. To ensure you get the best results, here are the steps that you need to follow:

  1. Cool: Making sure that the muffins are cool will prevent condensation from occurring within the parcels that you wrap them in, or in the freezer itself. This lack of moisture will prevent damage to the texture of the muffins.
  2. Wrap: Wrap each muffin individually in foil or cling film. Either option will work, but we would advise foil – no foil wrap will be airtight, and that low level of breathability will prevent moisture buildup within the packages themselves.
  3. Bag Up: Once you’ve wrapped each of the muffins, pop them all into one large freezer bag so you don’t end up with muffins rolling around in different parts of the freezer.
  4. Label: Making sure you place the proper date onto the muffins will ensure that you avoid eating one at a later date, only to find that itā€™s been ruined by freezer burn.
  5. Freeze: Storing the muffins in the centre of the freezer will prevent the muffins themselves from getting freezer burned, as it will place them as far away from the frost front as possible. The best way to prevent freezer burn is,, to not allow the muffins to get frost on them.

3 Tips for Freezing Apple Muffins

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing apple muffins to have the best results:

Wrap Tightly
The layer of foil that you wrap around the apple muffins youā€™re freezing needs to be quite tight to ensure that no, or very little, moisture gets into the package with the muffins. While ensuring you donā€™t crush the muffins, the foil layer should be pretty tight.

Use Smaller Apple Chunks
If you know ahead of time that youā€™ll be freezing the muffins, consider making the chunks of apple smaller. That will help you to store the muffins longer, as fruit chunks are more likely to get freezer burned than other parts of the muffin.

Forgo a Sugar Crust
Again, if you know that youā€™ll be freezing the batch of muffins youā€™re making, consider avoiding a sugar crust on top. The reason for this is that sugar attracts moisture, and in a moist environment like a freezer, a lot of moisture will get attracted to the muffin. This will lead to the muffin getting freezer burned.

How Long Can You Freeze Apple Muffins?

You can freeze apple muffins for around three months. They can be eaten if frozen longer than that, but the texture would likely be destroyed by freezer burn after three months.

To ensure you get the entire three months in the freezer, we would recommend ensuring that you follow our tips above including wrapping them tightly in foil.

How Long Do Apple Muffins Last in the Fridge?

At room temperature, apple muffins will last for around 2 days when stored in an airtight container. If placed in the fridge, then they can last for up to 1 week.

How Do You Defrost Apple Muffins?

The simplest way to defrost apple muffins is to unwrap them totally and then place them on the countertop at room temperature. In that warmth, they will thaw over around two hours.

To be sure they donā€™t end up sitting in a pool of water, consider placing them on a cooling rack so that any moisture will drip below the muffins.

Can You Refreeze Apple Muffins?

Yes, you can refreeze apple muffins. When doing this, make sure to follow the steps that we outline in the article above.

Regular refreezing of the muffins will be safe, but you may find that the texture changes drastically after repeated refreezing so try to avoid it where possible.

Do Apple Muffins Freeze Well?

Yes, apple muffins do freeze well. By and large, they donā€™t degrade very much in the freezer, which means they are still in excellent condition for afternoon tea after a long freeze.

To perk them up after freezing, you could consider quickly popping them in a 175C oven (wrapped in foil loosely) for around ten minutes.
